Kim jest Bohater Borys

 

Ta wiadomość jest od Bohatera Borysa, który jak każdy Bohater ma swojego śmiertelnego Wroga. Jest nim nieuleczalna choroba genetyczna zwana leukodystrofia metachromatyczna (MLD). To rzadkie schorzenie należy do grupy chorób spichrzeniowych, tzw. chorób zanikowych, które najczęściej dotyka dzieci. 

W wyniku błędu w jednym z genów organizm Borysa nie produkuje specjalnego enzymu (arylosulfatazy A – ARSA), co powoduje nadmierne nagromadzenie (spichrzanie) i nieusuwania z Jego mózgu sulfatydów (rodzaju tłuszczów). Po kilku latach ich sukcesywnego odkładania i normalnego rozwoju dziecka (bezobjawowo chorego na MLD), dochodzi do stopniowego zanikania kolejnych funkcji jego organizmu – dziecko  zaczyna cofać się w rozwoju – pierwszy cierpi układ motoryczny (nogi, ręce), potem zanika mowa, słuch, wzrok, zdolność jedzenia i oddychania, aż do śmierci w wyniku odkorowania mózgu.(więcej na temat MLD dowiecie się tutaj).

Choroba do końca 2020 roku postrzegana jest nieuleczalna i nie ma na nią lekarstwa. W grudniu 2020 r. Europejska Agencja Leków (EMA) zatwierdziła terapię genową (GT) o nazwie handlowej Libmeldy. Więcej informacji dostępnych jest na stronie EMA oraz Orchard Therapeutics Natomiast najbardziej powszechną metodą walki z MLD jest przeszczep szpiku lub komórek macierzystych (więcej na temat przeszczepu dowiecie się tutaj).

Dzięki odwadze i wiedzy lekarzy z wrocławskiego ośrodka przeszczepowego, BB 22 września 2015 r. został poddany jednemu z pierwszych w tym schorzeniu przeszczepów w Polsce. Zatem walka trwa dalej (więcej na temat (nie)codziennych wydarzeń przeczytacie w Dzienniku BB).

Dlaczego Bohater Borys? Gdyż Borys jest prawdziwym Bohaterem, który codziennie walczy dzielnie ze swym śmiertelnym Wrogiem, nie poddaje się i nie traci nadziei. Swym Bohaterstwem zaraża innych i motywuje ich do walki, a przy tym jest prawdziwym huncwotem, który ma zupełnie zwykłe problemy, jak to, czy Marysia nadal go lubi, a Michaś szybko wróci z „chorobowego” albo czy śnieg będzie taki sankowo-bałwanowy i czy Mikołaj na pewno nie przyniesie Mu dziewczyńskiego prezentu. Boris the Hero

 

This message is from Boris the Hero who just like any other hero has his own Deadly Enemy. It is an incurable genetic disease called Metachromatic Leukodystrophy (MLD). It is a rare disease which belongs to the group of lysosomal storage diseases (the video explaining the mechanism of MLD you will find here).

As a result of an error in one of the genes, the body of a sick child does not produce a specific enzyme (arylsulfatase A - ARSA), which causes an excessive accumulation of a non-removable lipid called sulfatase. After a few years when it accumulates in the brain, the child experiences gradual disappearance of some of the functions of the organism − in general starts to lose development skills. At first there is a problem with motor skills, then the speech fades, the child loses the ability to hear, see, eat, breath, which all leads to death.

The disease till the end of year 2020 was seen as incurable. In December 2020 European Medicines Agency (EMA) has granted a market access authorisation for gene therapy (GT) called Libmeldy. More info avaiable on EMA and Orchard Therapeutics.

However, the most common treatment of MLD is bone marrow or stem cell transplant (more about this procedure you will learn here).

 

Thanks to the knowledge and courage of the doctors from Transplant Clinic of Wroclaw, on 22nd of September, 2015 Borys had his stem cell transplant, one of the first procedure in this type of disease in Poland. Why do we call him Boris the Hero? Because Boris is a real Hero who every day fights bravely with his deadly enemy. He does not give up and does not lose hope. His heroism infects others and motivates them to keep on fighting. But at the same time he is a naughty scamp who has normal problems, such as whether Mary still likes him, whether Michael will return quickly after being sick or if the snow will be good for making snowman or what if St. Nicholas brings him gifts for girls. And well, real heroes always win their battles, and Boris is also a hero and he’ll win, won’t he?
